Diamond-tipped router bits stay sharper longer than carbide tipped router bits and tend to used in long production runs similar to insert router bits.  Some materials such as MDF dulls carbide router bits faster where diamond-tipped router bits tend to stay sharper much longer.  However, they are not for the average woodworker as this router bit type tends to be much more expensive.
